in today's world. It is jargon from the brake industry. There is a brake "overhaul" which is everything associated with the braking system either replaced or rebuilt, all rubber products, wear items and fluids. A very expensive way to go. Then there is a "friction" replacement. this is the opposite end of the spectrum as far as cost. This can mean anything from just replacement pads and shoes to replacement pads and shoes and turning of rotors and drums. Anywhere between these two limits is a "complete brake job". This can mean many things and usually a list of things to be acomplished is included just to make it sound as though a lot is being done but in reality it is mostly a Friction Job on your pocketbook! Some brake houses which advertise a "complete brake job" will specificly advertise caliper "restoration", rotor turning and fluid changes. This will usually run into the hundreds of dollars and you would be advised to study and observe carefully what is being done to your car. "DBA-BK" Brakes in Dallas, Texas was recently shut down and forced out of business because of advertising "Complete Brake Jobs" which included "caliper rebuild" which was just a solvent wash of the calipers and new pads for $249.95. BE ADVISED!
A lot determines how one drives and what is best for his braking requirements. Normally, one can replace the brake pads only for the first set of pads. If one is an agressive driver, it may require more, maybe replacing or turning the front rotors. Turning of the rotors on a Saab is usually a poor choice if they are deeply grooved, if not deep ( 0.2-.3 mm) just fitting new pads works well. OEM pads are usually good for 2-3 sets of pads per rotor set if not turned and under normal driving. OEM are also your best bet unless you just wish to experiment. After market pads are a toss up - depending on pads chosen - some are good and some aren't so good. Could be expensive if the wrong ones are selected.
Mixing and matching can be done but why waste your money just for show. If you need drilled and slotted you will also need the pads that make them work well>
