Hi All,
As some of you might remember I took my '87 9kT on a cross country trip this summer. Naturally, I have plent of stories to tell, but I'll keep the post mostly Saab related. Feel free to drop me an email about any other interests or curiosities. Anyway, my trusty 9000 now has 256k on it and performed wonderfully for the 10,000 mile, month long trip. I really can't stress enough how wonderful the Saab was in conditions from snow in Yellowstone to the several thousand foot climb in 100+ temperatures from LA to Las Vegas. I also pulled some durability tests that would have made the boys at Talladega (sp?) proud, such as running an even 2,000 miles from Sedona, Arizona to Asheville, NC stopping only for gas and food. The car was basically running for 35 hours straight! There were only two car related incidents. First a clip which held some vacuum lines together came apart and rubbed the serpentine belt until it shredded(a quick roadside repair) and second, I hit an object in the road well up in Vancouver Island which bent a control arm and damaged a wheel. What seemed like an inconvience actually become a wonderful part of the trip as we met some great folks in Coombs, BC who really went out of their way to give us a place to stay and look after us as we waited for parts. The friendly folks to our north (at least in Vancouver Island) truly are a pleasure to interact with. Anyway, I was also able to swap the control arm and associated parts by the side of the road (a lengthy and dificult but satisfying roadside repair) and continue on my way. I also got one speeding ticket, somewhat ironically in Montana, for a mere 14 over. Reports of the Montanabaun may be greatly exagerated. The basic route was from North Carolina up through the midwest into the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, etc., into Washington and Vancouver and then all the way down the coast road to LA until returning home through Nevada and Arizona. It really was a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime trip and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of new places, meeting new people, and living roughly by camping out most of the way. I even got some pictures of "Carhenge." My biggest regret is not getting to meet any other Saabnet folks, many of whom graciously offered to get together if I was in their area. I would have especially liked to meet Aaron Gilbert who has another high mileage '87 but unfortunalty I felt the need to make extra time after the delay on Vancouver Island. I'm now in Australia for a few months (another wonderful place to stay) while my 9k gets some much needed rest in storage so I might be a little slow on emails, but feel free to post any questions, I'm already happy to wax nostalgic about my great trip :)
