turbo air leak - not constant

I have a 91 9000 turbo. I just rebuilt the engine after the previous owner put on the headgasket himself incorrectly and broke the timing chain/sprocket...and more. Anyway, the car sat for about 6-7 months before I got my hands on it. A good friend knowledgable in SAABs helped me rebuild it and it runs good now except for one problem. When accelerating and building pressure on the turbo, i hear out the passenger side of the car a large air leak and the turbo is unable to build pressure. THis happens anytime...anywhere...and not all the time. It can also happen during either a lot of throttle or not much throttle at all. :( I have checked all hoses connecting to the turbo and replaced all gromits and vacuum lines. We also checked the wastegate seeing as how it sat for so long. I checked for cracks in some hoses as well. Does anyone have any thoughts or have you experienced the same? I have noticed recently(past two days) it happens mainly when the engine is cold.
