Knock is detected through the DI cassette. The MBC has no effect on the ECU's ability to detect knock. Trionic knock control is actually three fold. The ECU's anti-knock measures are as follows (in this order):
1. Retard timing by 1.5, then a max of 12 until knocking is eliminated.
2. Increase injection quantity slightly (this is done simultaneously with #1 as timing is retarded towards the max).
3. Reduce boost pressure
If the first two methods of knock control fail, then something must be pretty wrong. Either there's a problem with fuel delivery, you're using low-octane gas, or boost pressure is set too high. Bill is fully aware that good gas must be used. Since he gets full boost with the ECU connected (actually, more than full boost at times), I find it highly unlikely that there's something wrong with his fuel delivery system. The boost pressure cannot possibly be too high since he's set it lower than stock. I see no reason why a factory boost control system that's incapable of controlling boost properly would be safer than a manual boost control system that can. Even if the MBC is evil, it is the lesser of the two.
