It's easy enough to tell. Jack up the car and crawl under. Aim a flashlight at the shift coupler. You'll see a split piece of rubber if it is the culprit.
One month ago I had a similar problem on my 94 CS. 1st has little power. Have to start from 2nd. I suspected the transmission. Words cannot describe my relief when I crawl under and saw the split rubber.
Got the piece of rubber from Sobstory for $9.95. 15 minutes later, the car shift drove like a champ again.
