Sure it can be done, and it doesn't require an alarm. The trick is to find a remote system that's SIMPLE enough for the job... Most of the high-buck units will do it with so much work that I'd forget it.
JCWhitney's $39.95 unit is their cheapest, and does quite nicely.
Any competent auto electrician can do it: simply splice (not replace) into the inputs of the Central Locking ECU, and you're in business. Recommend that they have a couple of diodes handy, as they might discover some confusion in the Central Locking system with both the original input (Driver's side door lock) and the new remote input. Probably not, but diodes are cheap and it's really easy to try them out if the system behaves oddly.
Short answer: the wiring diagram in the UK Haynes manual eloquently describes how easily it can be done.
And I'll not offend a professional car-tinkerer from the country that invented car-tinkering by suggesting that they're "numpties."
