Hi,
The crack is on the left hand side of the turbo housing, I think the housing for the exhaust turbine. The water is leaking from the joint
between the exhaust manifold and the turbo exhaust inlet. I think the
two are primarily unrelated, although it's possible that the water leaking
onto the turbo housing may have caused corrosion.
Just spoke to another mechanic who himself phoned a saab expert and he
said it was almost certainly the gasket. Like me, he couldn't envisage
a water leak in the turbo to cause those symptoms.
As for Saab taking responsibility, I think you are right in what you say.
They may notionally find something different wrong with it when they
get the head off and hey presto, I pay. Although I do think that they
are trying to scare me a little by saying that it may not be the
gasket when they realise it is, and hope that I won't proceed.
As for the warped head/cracked block scenario ... I can't discount
this but then saab said that they would have checked this when
they replaced it last time.
No idea why they had to replace it twice though ... should have asked at
the time. doh!
ho hum...
Gary.
