I tried anti-sieze, with the theory that lubricating the joint would help it seat squarely when I tightened it up. I also hoped the residue would help seal the joint, but so far, it hasn't. The anti-seize becomes solid after only a short time on the O2 sensor, so I was hoping it could plug any slight leak. Perhaps I'll try applying a bit more and let it idle for a long time to harden the compound. I'll also keep looking for another suitable compound.
I have had a Saab dealer look at it and they recognised the noise straight away. They say they sometimes have problems with the standard downpipe.
There is no gasket and it appears they don't use any compound. The joints are not butt joints but taper joints - the end of the downpipe is flared (bell-mouthed) and the lip on the turbo is as shown below. Since the mating surfaces are both convex, it looks like the contact area is designed to be a very narrow ring.
