Brake weirdness

A couple of brake oddities have been collecting in my awareness, now to the point where I'd be happy to hear input. Car is 91 9kT, 5-speed, no TCS.
1) Sometimes the brake pedal is quite hard upon application. By this I mean that the usual gradual push isn't there; it's more like stepping on a block of wood. Car stops, yes, but the modulation factor seems off somehow.
2) Very occasionally, I've been experiencing uneven braking. This occurs under hard-stop conditions, and involves real lateral pull. It's only happened a few times over the past weeks, but it is very disconcerting. I have noticed that this does not seem to be in one direction only--car has pulled both right and left on different occasions.
Car has 140k, rotors do not show evidence of warping, pads have plenty of thickness remaining. New tires (Nocian Ecsta)about 4k ago. Most of the replaceable front-end pieces have been done. As is typical of cars this age and mileage, fluid and abs lights stay on for a bit when first starting out in the morning.
Thanks in advance for comments!
