Power Window Failure

The driver side front window has finally failed on my '91 9000 CD Turbo. Of course it managed to do so while my wife was driving in a rainstorm. This window has periodically been problematic in the past. It would occassionally stick every now and then, but then finally work after a few tries. Now it seems dead. I've checked the fuse (seems fine) and the front passenger side works just fine.
Could someone step me through the process for diagnosing and fixing the problem? Is it logical to check the switch first or the motor? How do you do either? How much should I expect to pay for a new or used motor if that turns out to be the problem? How tough a job is this for a novice?
thanks in advance. My poor Saab seems to be falling apart on me all of a sudden. Expensive airconditioner repair/conversion in June. Possible motor mount problems now (knocking sound on acceleration coming from right of the engine compartment), bumper needs to be replaced (yes I know this isn't a mechanical problem), and now the window won't close. Why doesn't my car love me anymore?
