I'll bet you're one wrench short... Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Pls help car is sparking!!!!!???, nick ![]() |
Lots of possiblities, none of them particularly pleasant. Since you were just doing some major work on the car, I'd think about things associated with doing work - like dropped bolts, wrenches, sockets, or something that didn't get tightened down properly.
My first guess would be that something got dropped into the area and got trapped - like a bolt, wrench, or socket. With all that spinning stuff, it's only a matter of time until it ends up in the wrong place.
Other possiblities - has an engine mount come off? Look at the upper engine mount (torsion bar) - it should be pretty much pointing straight forward and level, and the rubber bushing shouldn't be crushed to one side or the other.
Of course, the main pulley (harmonic balancer) is a sandwich of two metal pulleys with a rubber center. If the rubber gives out, the pulleys will separate, and it's common for the rear one to back into the oil pump housing. that would give off sparks and smoke.
It's possible the harmonic balancer has given way, but it's way too much of a coincidence for it to happen within a few days of major work. I'll put my money on a spare tool falling into the belt/pulley area. Look around with a flashlight, but I'd jack up and support the right front of the car, and remove the RF tire and then the fender inner-liner. Not only will that give you a good view, it'll give you the access you need to remove the offending object and decide if more repairs are necessary.
Good luck!
