1. Your '93 has the amp for the front speakers mounted in the back of the stereo cage, and the amp for the rear speakers under the passanger seat. Both amps are seriously under-powered and any modern head unit with built in amplification will probably be more powerful. I do not remember the exact specs of the amps but I thought they said "50 watts" which means "50 watts MAX", roughly equal to 25 watts RMS, which is split between 2 channels for a total of about 13 watts/channel - it is not uncommon to find modern head units with 20 - 30 watts/channel.

2. Is it likely to find an aftermarket unit that will use the 7-pin cord: NO.

3. Yes, an up-to-date head unit wired directly to the rear speakers should give you equal or better performance with the stock speakers, and _absolutely_ better performance with a pair of $99 aftermarket speakers (I wouldn't spend much more on the rears, since they are mostly just for fill).
3b - not sure quite what you mean, since all speakers need 2 wires going to them.

Short chronology of my Audio journey:
Bought car - stock system
Replaced rear speakers with aftermarket - better sound, still not much bass
replaced stock rear amp with aftermarket - much more, better bass
added second aftermarket amp and 12-inch Shiva subwoofer - more bass than I could use.
Removed factory stereo, CD, cages, and installed JVC MP3 head unit - head drives front speakers, preamp outs to small amp driving rear speakers, sub-preamp-out to big amp driving sub: Result - fantastic sound all around - probably the end of my journey, unless I eventually replace front speakers (but they sound quite good stock).

Good luck - I'd say the most bang-for-your-buck solution is to get a high-power head unit with good pre-outs (you won't use them now but will want them for future upgrades), and wire all 4 existing speakers into the new Head.
