I recently bought a 93 9kna and had a problem where if you shut off the car while the fan was running, it would kick down to low speed mode, but never shut off, even after the supposed 10 minute time delay. I noticed this about two weeks after the dealer replaced the fan thermostat because the car was overheating.
I only owned the car for a couple days before I brought it to the dealer, so I don't know if the fan wasn't shutting off before the thermostat replacement or started after it. It's not often that the radiator fan is running when I shut the car off, so it took a while for me to notice this. I figured I'd try to fix it myself because I couldn't prove the dealer "fix" caused it, besides the fact that the dealer is a long way from me and a pain to bring the car in.
I played around with the relays and have figured out that while the car is running and the fan clicks on, it always goes into high speed mode. It's supposed to go to low speed at a certain temp and only click to high if the temp keeps rising above a certain level.
When the fan is running, I pulled out the high speed relay (smaller white one on left), and it drops down to low speed mode and cycles as normal, so the fan resistor must be working ok.
I put the high speed relay back in and pulled the low speed relay (green one in middle) and it seems to make absolutely no difference when the car is running. If I leave the low speed relay out, the fan cycles on and off normally, but does not stay on after you shut off the ignition. I tried swithching the green low speed relay with the "extra" one on the right side, as well as one from the junkyard and my wifes 900t and it makes absolutely no difference, so the relay must be good. It seems that the high and low speed relays are getting energized
I also pulled the fan timer fuse (5amp) and this completely disables the radiator fan, low and high speed, which is pretty puzzling to me.
So this is a long way of saying that my solution is I just leave the middle green relay out and the fan works fine on high speed mode only. I figure that since most cars lived fine without a time delay fan for the years prior to electric fans becoming common, this one will too.
I think you will be fine leaving it out, but I'd be very interested to know if when you put in in whether your fan works in low speed mode and shuts off after the normal delay when the ignition is off. If your car is like mine, you can use the other green relay to test this. In mine it is labled "extra headlight" and not hooked up to anything.
