This is going off memory since my wife is currently driving the SAAB. Not sure what year yours is, but ours is a 91 9kT. I think after about 90, they were all changed to become more reliable. Pretty much universal beyond that (ACC-2).
I did not remove the evaporator housing. I just removed the cruise module for better access (almost required). The metal bracket you referred to comes out with the motor when the two BOLTS are removed. The two bolts are on the front and should be fairly accessible. They hole the BRACKET to the car. Surprisingly, they are the only thing holding the motor on, other than the friction of the shaft/flap. There might actually be a tensioner in the flap to hold the shaft in there.
If you remove all the little machine screws, it just loosens up the bracket somewhat from the motor, but the motor will still be pretty snug. I suppose in some magical way, it may help the shaft come loose, but technically, it shouldn't matter. After attempting to slide it back/forth several times (this is where lube would help), it finally slid out. Takes alot of patience.
