Saabster:
Silicone's clarity is a win-win, but it is not only sloppy to apply, it WILL migrate. (The really high-viscosity stuff we used in some dampers would literally "crawl" out of nearly-full unsealed containers, albeit over months.)
Graphite's going to be neater to apply, the little plastic "spray tube" for lubing locks might be ideal. But it's not transparent, and will make tracks on the upholstry and you. (You're white "Johnt Travolta" jacket will look tacky with grey stripes under the left arm! ;)
Seriously, I'm guessing there's a reason those channels are unlubed. Perhaps changing them would be the answer: even with used ones with less aging, say a wrecked car that's sat for several years might have favored one side with less sun. (Ozone and temp. degradation can only be avoided by buying new.)
I'm betting that the texture is the key, so if you've got a friction problem, maybe it's cuz the channels are now smooth? Contact area on that peraly texture must be infinitly less than smooth, and that might correlate with a pretty decent drop in friction.
My two cents: Dennis Miller's Disclaimer implicitly applied.
