I checked the control arm bushing last night, and it doesn't seem to have an excessive amount of play -- then again, I don't know what excessive is. With a pry bar I could move it a fair bit, while I couldn't get the front to budge. With the car jacked up and the wheel snugly attached to the hub, I can fairly easily rock the wheel in the horizontal axis probably an inch or two each way; the vertical axis has no play. Visual inspection of the suspension pieces tells me that the sway bar mount is very, very tired and worn, the outer tie rod end doesn't look fantastic (although I don't have anything to compare to, and it seems tightly attached to the hub). It would help if I had good parts to compare to. Steering rack is tightly mounted.
I don't want to just start to replace parts, although each of the individual parts there are relatively cheap, they will quickly add up to real $$, and I still need to replace both lower motor mounts, which are greasy piles of goo. I can live with it if its not a safety issue, but I don't know that at this point. I suppose I could have a mechanic look at it, but for the cost of that I could just replace the rear control arm bushings on both sides, the ball joints and the outer tie rods.
All help greatly appreciated.
