The first step is to figure out if it is a fuel or spark problem. Just had the same symtoms in my 88, it was the ignition amplifier. It could also be the coil or the sensor in the distributor. If its the distributor, the tach will go to 0. The amp problem drove me nuts cause the tach kept working when the motor would cut out. If fuel suspect the fuel pump or boost pump. Does it only happen when the tank is low, like less than 1/3 full? that would be a sign of the boost pump. Also there is the possibility of the fuel pump relay going, Its a relativly cheap item to replace, though you do have to pull the glove box to get at it. An ignition or fuel computer problem should, but not always give a check engine light and store a code. I think you have the 2.2 system that requires the "box" to read the codes.
