Up to '89 models, there was S and turbo. In the US market, both had 16-valve 2.0 liter engines without balance shafts. The 9000S produced 125 hp and the turbo 160.

In '89, the 9000CD and 9000CD turbo were introduced, which both had a trunk instead of a hatchback. If I recall correctly, this is when the 2.3 liter 16-valve twin balance shaft engine was introduced. They continued making the 9000S and 9000 turbo in '89 and '90 with the old 2.0 liter engine. In '91, the 2.3L engine was put in the 9000, 9000S and 9000 turbo. Engine was exactly the same in the 9000 and 9000S, normally aspirated. Those cars differed in terms of accessories, like alloy wheels, sunroof and leather. The 9000 turbo in '91 and '92 had low gearing with the standard transmission and is very quick.

In '93, the 9000 body style was changed to give a lower grill and higher back end, and IMHO this was the beginning of poorer rear end styling in the 9000. Some people like it, though. The 2.3L 16V twin balance shaft engine was kept, but they also introduced a normally aspirated 210hp V6 at some point there. I know they had it by '95, but I don't know about earlier. It wasn't wildly popular.
Again, US market:
9000 CS: hatchback, 2.3L light pressure turbo, 170hp. Leather optional. You'll see references on this BB about upgrading from LPT to FPT, and that means this car.
9000 CSE: hatchback, 2.3L full pressure turbo, 200 hp.
9000 Aero: hatchback, 2.3 L tweaked to 225 hp, but only if you had a standard transmission. With autobox, 200 hp. Special seats and wheels well liked by many.
9000 CDE: Had a trunk instead of hatchback. This is the car you could get the V6 on. If I recall correctly, you could only get an autobox. The trunk style was discontinued some time after '95.

Probably more info than you wanted, but I got going, you know.
