but it isn't. If it were, my timing chain wouldn't have slipped, causing bent valves in the head. Let me explain...

The two chains, plus the oil pump and the crank pulley are all driven by the crank shaft. There is a longitudinal slot on the crank shaft where sprockets for the two chains, oil pump gear and crank pulley fit onto it. A crescent shaped Woodruff key fits exactly between the slot on the crank shaft and a cut on the inside of the sprockets and gears. So as the crank shaft rotates, the sprockets, oil pump gear and the crank pulley rotate with it.

I told you the timing chain slipped on my old 94cs engine. The reason it did was the timing chain sprocket sheared off the tip of the crescent shaped Woodruff key. If the balance chain sprocket was on the inside instead of the timing chain sprocket, it wouldn't have caused that much damage on the engine. At the most I would have had more vibration on the engine because the BS chain was not turning.

You may ask why the timing chain slipped. It is because the crank pulley was not tightened. The result of the crank pulley not tightened to spec (129 ft-lbs for MY94 and after) could have disastrous consequences. It causes the gears and sprockets to walk on the crank shaft. Since the timing chain sprocket engages the key on the tip, a little play will cause the sprocket to be free turning with respect to the crank shaft. When it does, you'll have a major engine damage like I did.

Always, always remember to tighten the crank pulley (H balancer) to spec when you do R&R in that area.
