I'm not sure because it is a different transmission than the borg warner units in the 99/900's but since they are basic units, I would suspect a seal in the front pump or there about. When your RPM drops the pump can't keep up the pressure to keep the clutches and bands in operation. When you step on it the pressure builds back up and what you get is literally a "thunk" engagement of all the parts. (Not good). I drove an old 99 that way for many a mile and just got used to putting it in Neutral at lights or stops.
I eventually stopped driving it and it went to junk/recycle yard, so I can't say how long you'll get away with such operation.
Any other theory or facts out there?
