I have a 9K Aero, have never driven a 9-5 Aero, but from what I've gleaned from road tests the latter model is more refined. Don't forget, the 9K is basically a 16-year-old design that has been tweaked and improved since its inception in 1985. Thus, the design is considered dated, though far short of undesirable. Personally, I like the feel of the 9K, and have owned three of them.
As for overall roominess, the 9K has the 9-5 beat with its large trunk and hatchback design, but not the 9-5 wagon, which is also available with the Aero option. From what I've seen, the 9-5 isn't as quick, as I think it is heavier--but the 2002 has 250 hp and I'm anxious to see a road test on it. It also has a new 5-speed auto tranny option which sounds excellent, and is available with the same engine as the manual, unlike the 9K. I'm not a slushbox kinda guy, but I would look hard at one of these if I was buying a new car.
I did drive a '99 9-5 with V6 auto, and although the ride was excellent compared to my 9K Aero the engine didn't send my heart a-reelin'. Overall, the car had an excellent feel, more refined that a 9K, IMHO.
