The 2 bad bearings I have had in SAAB (Bosch & Motorola) alternators caused damage beyond the bearing itself. If the bearing siezes it can rotate in the case and wear the hole out of round. Or if its the back bearing it can wear the shaft. Either of these problems will require machining and special tools. And a special over/under size bearing. If you overhaul your own to extend the life, I would only recommend it before bearing failure. The other problem is that while the brushes wear, so does the armature contact surface. While it looks replaceable, I have yet to find a aftermarket source for what is also called the slip ring. A quality REMANUFACTURED unit will correct all this.
