I would start with the battery. That sounds a lot like a bad battery, or a problem in getting current out of the battery.
First off, the things you can do right in your driveway. Make sure the connections between the battery clamp and posts are good. Pull them off and clean the mating surfaces. If it is a 'maintenance' type battery, pull the little plugs for the cells and look in. Is the water level over the battery plates? If not, then you're running your cells dry in the battery.
Get yourself a Battery Specific Gravity tool. You can pick this up at any autoparts store, and most big chain stores (like WalMart). It's just a clear plastic body with a littl hose and a rubber squeeze bulb. You use the squeeze bulb to pull some fluid up from each cell (one at a time). It determines the specific gravity of the cell fluid, which will tell you its state of charge.
If the Battery light was off when you were driving, chances are good the alternator works just fine. If the engine isn't running and the key is turned to ON, it's normal for the Battery light to be on.
If I had to guess, if the battery clamps are OK, then the battery is shot. As batteries get old, they have a hard time to keep charge. I just replaced a battery yesterday with this problem. Jump the car and it runs fine. It might even start again if you try right after shutting it down. But wait a few minutes, and the engine won't turn over.
Good luck!
