Given that your office is in the Chrysler Building (42nd Street and Lexington Avenue) your principal choices re housing outside the city would be Westchester County (north of New York City and accessible via the Grand Central Train station (1 block from your office))or Northern New Jersey (accesible via the Port Authority Bus Terminal (about 3/4 mile from your office). Apartment prices outside of NYC would be significantly cheaper than in the city (for example, you can get a reasonably nice one bedroom apartment in North Jersey for $1,200 versus $1,800 + in New York and the monthly commutation cost would be about $100 by bus). Can't comment on apartment pricing in Westchester County except to say that it would be higher than in New Jersey. Also, you would tend to get larger apartments in the suburbs than you would in the city (newer buildings).
Good luck.
