the wires are probably shorting together. I had this happen on the brake fluid sensor on an older 9k. Apparently, the switch is held open by the fluid, and closes when the level drops. Shorting the wires together is the same as closing the switch contacts. Try stripping back the wires until you find good insulation and tape them so they can't touch. If this solves the problem, consider splicing new wire into the circuit to finish the fix.
