Couldn't resist the price on the discontinued SZ-50's from Tire Rack.
Even though they aren't the correct size (225/50-16's), at $73/tire
it seemed a sensible thing to do! I had to cut off the ends of the
stainless studs that hold the fender liners on, yet still get slight
rubbing with aggressive high speed cornering - it's not enough to cut
the tires, but I can hear it, occasionally. It's too bad Firestone didn't make a 215/50 version - they would have been perfect with the modified
fender liner studs. The tires perform better than the Michelin Pilots
that I replaced. The SZ-50's grip are unbelievable under acceleration.
With a greater footprint area, no longer will the front wheels spin in 3rd. And in wet conditions there is no comparison with the Michelins. I wouldn't want to try them auto-x'ing because of the slight rubbing, but for my daily driver, considering the cost, I'm quite happy with them.
