In 1988 there is a serpentine belt that drives the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. There is a separate belt to drive the Air Conditioning compressor.
You could be hearing the squeal because the belt is getting loose, is worn, or both. The tension adjustment for the belt is manual.
If the serpentine belt is over 3 years old, think about replacing it. Open the hood and look at it - it's the big belt. The AC belt is the smaller one that goes towards the front. If the belt looks worn or frayed, replace it. If it looks good, press down on the middle, mid-way between the two pulleys. It should be pretty taut. If not, it can be tightend up.
I'm not a big believer in 'belt dressing'. I've never needed to use it, and any time a belt squealed for me, it meant something needed replacement or adjustment.
Good luck!
