Was your O2 sensor originally by the turbo, or down by the sump (oil pan)?
If it was by the turbo, it should fit. Try unclipping the wires from the side of the engine and taking some of the slack from the back.

I had some problems getting the thread to catch, too, but it should work. Perhaps disconnecting the O2 sensor cable from the connector at the back will help, making it easier to manipulate. That worked for me. The connector has a locking clip that needs to be unclipped.
