Lu's right, you simply pry the whole thing out of the console using a thin blade--I use a putty knife. Once it's out, tie a string onto the wiring harness (so it won't disappear when you do the next step), and dettach the entire switch box from the wiring. Then over a washtub or similar, open the switch box (SPROING!) You can now clean the contacts and the springs and do the puzzle of putting it together again. Do test that it works before you push it back into the console -- it's easy to get the single-push switches in backward, and much easier to remedy this without having to start the whole procedure over again.
It's NOT a killer task, so check out doing it before laying out the bucks. Unlike so many other manufacturers' similar ideas, this one is actually servicable--which is why I contend it isn't "dumb".
