Frank, living in the middle of nowhere in Finland I couldn't imagine driving w/o the studs.
The conditions are very different from yours, though - the worst is when there's slick ice with water on it, i.e. when the temperature raises above freezing.... the studs are the only way to get forward or to stop. Just my humble opinion....
On the other hand, the studs won't live long with speeds exceeding 70-80MPH because the centrifugal force will fly them out in no time, especially if they are already loosened by the torque of the 2,3 turbo. I have currently 185/65/15 studedde Viking snow tires and the wheel spin is phenomenal in 2nd if I'm not careful with the accelerator. The studs are also NOISY.
If you only see snow and dry ice, you might consider unstudded winter tires, there are several around and the best ones are almost as good as the best studded on snow and better on dry and wet pavement. Winter tires are BIG over here, I'll find a recent test in one of the magazines and let you know how each tire rated in every respect.
Regards,
Tapani
