Yay!!! (Calm down, BJ...)
Finally, after months of my '96 Aero's lean mixture problem getting gradually worse, I finally brought it back to normal today. Hans Nunnink might want to check this if he hasn't already, as he appeared to have the same problem.
Having shelled out £100 for the proper O2 sensor, I was disappointed to find the problem was still as bad as ever. However, prompted by BillR, I checked the resistance of the intake air temperature sensor against the Trionic data on the Townsend site and found it reading low resistance (high temperature). Hmmm... Trionic calculates air mass from manifold pressure and temperature, so if it knows the pressure and thinks the temperature is higher than it is (air less dense), it will calculate too little air mass, therefore feed too little fuel. Bingo!
A new sensor (Saab part 9174442) cost £23.82 (about US$35) and I fitted it in less than a minute in the dealer's forecourt (I brought a 19mm spanner with me). I didn't feel the effect at first, but over the 15 or so miles back to work, it gradually got better. When I got home this evening, I disconnected the battery for half an hour, went for some Trionic adaptation runs and the car runs brilliantly! I've still got that slight miss at 3000 RPM no-load, so perhaps it's unrelated, but the car is smooth and powerful and lovely and... (I said calm DOWN!!!)
So thanks to BillR and the rest of the BBS.
And to the guy in the red BMW with the skirts and the noisy exhaust who couldn't have picked a better night to beg for a damned good thrashing: a big "thank you". You made my night.
