half studded snow tires? Posted by Frank [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Time to replace winter tires on my 93 Aero. Have been using Gislaved Nord Frost II on stock 185/65 16 steel rims, with the the tires half studded. A peculiar practice in Denver Colorado, inner row of studs studded, outer row left unstudded on all 4 tires. A compromise for the unique weather in Denver and the nearby Rocky Mountains. Relatively mild winter weather in Denver with maybe 10-15% days with some snow or ice, an occasional blizzard, and severe weather conditions frequently in the nearby mountains. I live in the city but go into the mountains frequently to ski. I like to drive fast when the roads are dry, but need good traction to dodge the wild and crazy over-confident SUV's when the roads get really bad!
Does anyone half any experience with half studding. Planning on trying half studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta 1's. Inside of tire with studs will provide better traction in ice and snow, outside unstudded tread will provide better traction on dry pavement especially on turns, and quieter ride with only inside row studded. Do any of you engineers, or Saab technical types know of any technical reasons not to half stud? Does anyone have any experience positive or negative they are willing to share? Is this done anywhere else in the universe?
Thanks, Frank from Denver
