You don't want to hear this but I had these symptoms and ended up with a blown cylinder head gasket (corrosion in 10 places). Progressively the pressure was became very high in the reservoir until eventually it started weeping past the cap. It then required regular top ups of coolant. Then it would bubble and boil in the reservoir tank when the engine was stopped. Eventually at 70 mph it went 'woosh' and dumped the all coolant. Head gasket blown.

Past history was a number of radiator themostatic switches changed by previous owner to try an solve lack of slow speed fan (eventually traced to a broken wire in a stretched cable loom). Also the history of regular coolant/antifreeze changes was pretty suspect and probably contributed to the problem. The radiator change might help your problem in the short term.

When the head gasket was changed the head required some welding to rectify corrosion problems in the head and then a light skim.
