If it's a light-pressure turbo, then no, it is designed to be a smooth torquey engine that combines good performance, driveability and fuel economy with a reasonable amount of power. The LPT will be missing the boost control solenoid on the radiator with its three hoses that your '86 will have (no LPT in '86). It also won't have a boost guage.
If the solenoid and boost guage are there, you have a full-pressure turbo and may have a problem. Tell us what the boost guage is doing. However, the 2.3l engines are much smoother and pull strongly from much lower down than the 2.0l ones. If it's a 2.3 and working properly, you won't get the "kick" at around 3000 RPM that you would get from the 2.0l. It should press you into the seat a bit, though - just less suddenly.
