This is really just a WAG, but the ACC temp display brightness is controlled by a photoeye - I don't know which one, but there's one on the SCC on my car and another on the front of the stereo (IIRC). If one of those is bad it's possible that the display will be at its dimmest setting all the time. You can check to see if it ever gets bright by setting the preset for the airflow options (assuming ACC II here, ACC I may be different) by pressing the top and bottom buttons on the right side of the display simultaneously. On second thought this may be the self-test function - check the manual or Townsend's site for more on this. Anyway, on my car that causes the display to step through the 4 or 5 different display brightnesses before re-settling on the "correct" brightness level for the ambient conditions. If the photoeye that controls the brighness is bad I suppose it could be replaced with a good one or possibly wired around to have full bright all the time, but I don't really know - this is all conjecture and deduction.
