Ron : The pictograph becomes a constant source of annoyance on older Saabs . The bulb showing brake light trouble is operated by a relay with two windings . One winding goes through the left brake light filament to ground , the other , wound in the opposite direction , goes to the right filament . When both filaments are lit (and of the same resistance) the two windings cancel each other out and the relay does not operate -- no pictograph warning .When 1 filament burns out that winding will not operate as its current cannot reach ground through the now open circuit so the other winding operates the relay and lights the pictograph .
In older cars corrosion develops on some of the metal contacts at the tail light assy. itself which has an arrangement of metal "bus bars" forced into V shaped slots in another metal piece that contacts the actual bulb contacts . If you clean the corrosion or even better - solder the joints - you should cure the problem . Your problem could also be caused by the L & R bulbs being slightly different (having slightly different filament resistances) Make sure the 2 bulbs are the same make and age . There may also be corossion in the socket itself at the contacts.
Good luck .
