I'm impressed - that's pretty imaginative. If this person actually believes in non-start problems due to 'tail light chips' I suggest you sell him some aluminum foil to wear as a hat to keep the aliens from reading his thoughts. If he/she doesn't actually believe it, they are pretty evil. That's the choices evil or stupid.

There is no 'tailight computer' in the 9000, or any other Saab I know of. There is a device that lights up a display on the dash if a headlight or tail light is out. That system is flakey on the early 9000 (pre 90 or so), and will occasionally display a tail light being out even if they're good. But that has NOTHING to do with starting.

If the car sometimes won't start, that can be a few things. A lot depends on what 'no start' means. Does the engine turn over and not catch, or does it plain not turn over? If it doesn't turn over, it could be solenoid, battery cables, or ignition switch. If an automatic, it could be as simple as a misaligned switch in the shifter (try wiggling the shifter while in Park) If it turns over but doesn't catch, that could be fuel pump, fuel pump relay, ignition swithc (again), or ignition system. If you turn the key and it turns over but doesn't catch, does the tachometer needle bounce? If it doesn't suspect hall effect sensor in the distributor or ignition amplifier.

As I said before, the person selling this car has either pocket lint for brains or downright lying. When buying a used car, I always suspect the person selling it has a tail, and horns hidden under his hat, and that they have to prove that every word they say isn't a lie. This person has started out on the wrong hoof, er foot. I would walk away, and find another car. If you really want this one, pay to have a mechanic that knows Saabs look at it. If the seller won't accept that, leave immediately and never come back.

The 9000 is a great car. Don't risk ruining that experience by getting stuck with a bad one. There are good ones out there, being sold by people with more intelligence than God gave dirt.

Good luck!
