Subject:
Noise Complaint, Front Tires Rubbing Against The Wheel Housing

Application:
M92 9000 Models

In some cases, the front tires may touch the wheel housings on full lock causing a noise or rubbing complaint. To prevent this, the steering gear tie rods can be adjusted. If you have customer complaints of this nature, please follow the instructions below.

Action Required (Figure 1):

1. Adjust the tie rods until the distance between the tie rod end and the groove in the steering rack does not exceed 2 mm (0.079 in) on either side.

2. Adjust the toe-in as described in Section 601-2 of the Service Manual. Adjust both tie rods by equal number of turns.

3. Check the lengths of the tie rods, Section 601-4 of the Service Manual. Compare the two lengths. The difference between the two sides of the car must not exceed 2 mm (0.079 in).

4. Torque the locknuts on the be rod ends to 60 - 80 N-m (44.4 - 59.2 lb.ft). Tighten the clamps on the rubber bellows.

5. Drive the car and check by turning the steering wheel to full lock in both directions.

Warranty Information:

For warranty claims, use Failure Coding 64311 - 79-0-01-05. Time allowance is labor operation no. 12601 for 0.3 hour.
