Curb weight of that car is probably around 3300 lbs. stock. For rapid straight-line acceleration, some of the more important items would be:
1. higher boost, especially in 2nd and 3rd gears.
2. Stickier tires
3. Stiffer springs to prevent nose rising up so much.
4. Limited-slip differential, although this is pricey (Abbott Motorsports).
You are a bit hampered in this car by the fact that its tranny doesn't tolerate slam shifting so well. As you know, FWD also presents its own difficulties in terms of standing starts (aka, launching the car). GM a few years ago came up with the conclusion, with regard to their FWD Cadillacs, that 300 hp was about the limit for a FWD car, in terms of usable power. However, getting the 2.3L engine up to 300hp requires more than just a few mods. The transmission might be the first casualty of that much power, if the car does a lot of drag racing.
The guys on the performance BB should be helpful, but many of them run classic 900's, not 9000's.
