I just literally came in from the garage after cleaning my Idle Air Controller, and I have to say that at least for my 10 minute test ride, the repair is MIRACULOUS.
Symptoms were dying after letting off the pedal, extremely roughtransitions from on-power to off-power (the engine was literally leaping in the bay...Yes, I know my mounts are shot too, thanks.) and an oddly high (1200-1300rpm) idle that wandered when cold.
Your symptoms are different, but since you have a HIGH idle, it is due to extra air getting around the throttle plate. This IAC repair is very cheap, weasy to do (requires only ONE torx driver) and might fix it if the air your getting is due to a stuck-open IAC.
Air can also be coming from any cracked hoses, or a stuck valve on the vapor-cannister purge valve. (Well, at least that's what AllData said...)
The idle air controller on my 91 9kT sits under the throttle body.
1)Remove throttle cable
2)Remove bracket that supports the throttle cable (torx).
3)Remove the rubber elbow feeding intake air to the throttle body. (Careful: age and heat make them brittle)
4)Remove the valve. (Cold engine, friends, 'cuz you'll be lying across the top to reach things.)
Get it out completely, clean the contacts of its plug and socket, and please coat them with an appropriate contact cleaner/preservative.
I cleaned the valve-part (whose tubes were COMPLETELY sooted black) with a generic brand of penetrating oil, then blew it out. When I was done, the interior was shiny as can be, and the rotating valve looked almost new.
The difference was amazing. Long term what will happen? I don't know, but operation has been fully restored, and it took 2 hours. Check it out, it cannot hurt to try, and it would have saved my old 900 from the scrap heap, or at least delayed it' demise for a while...
