A followup to my previous rant. Well, I gave in and took the car into the local foreign car repair shop, as I still haven't found a good local Saab specialist. I had them pull the alternator and R&R the voltage regulator. Interesting experience - the tech wanted to pull the intake to get at the alternator - I told him no way, go look it up you should go through the wheel well. He did and I was right. Also they wanted me to replace the entire alternator ($250 from them) rather than just the very obviously burnt out voltage regulator ($35 at Pep Boys) - I said no. Unfortunately, the belt tensioner broke when he pulled the accessory drive belt ($135) - I think they may have broken it with improper procedures but cannot confirm so oh well. Had the tech replace a leaky front main seal while he was there, after I (1) explained that you simply pull the harmonic dampener and pull & replace the seal and (2) showed him how to navigate through the Saab repair manuals to prove that I was right (thanks to this Board). The book called for 2 hours labor, he charged me 1 hour labor even though it was probably all of 5 extra minutes for him, rat bastard. All told, 4 hours labor @ $62/hour for the alternator R&R, plus 1 hour labor for the seal, plus $150 or so in parts & miscellaneous charges, I was $535 lighter at the end of the day. Sucks for a stupid $35 part and one screw that wouldn't come free! And now the radio won't take the code - I'm workng on that thanks to the board's archives too.

Thanks for listening and the help - all your suggestions were good but there was just no room to maneuver at the back of the alternator.

Scott
