MPG display differs from actual milage

anyone know why the readout on my MPH display is consistantly 3 1/2 mpg higher than my actual milage. Have stock 93 9K cse with 100,000 miles and correct size tires.Bought car with 79000 miles and no history. Had my first tune-up last week so I'm not yet sure if things have changed as I have not refilled tank yet. O2 was changed twice as I was only getting 24-25 MPG with 75% highway driving.
