The only concern is with the back wheels locking up... Posted by Joe [Email] (#444) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Joe) on Mon, 26 Nov 2001 20:12:20 In Reply to: Snow Tires, tomring, Fri, 23 Nov 2001 11:54:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When the back wheels lockup, they have less friction than the front. This causes the back wheels to pass up the front wheels while cornering(very bad.) Saab and other car companies have greatly under powered the rear brakes so that this situation does not occur. When a tire locks up in snow, the tread is filled with snow, so the tread type does not matter. Having snow tires on the front and all season on the back has less of an affect on friction than having and empty gas tank compared to a full tank.
Therefore, use the same tire left to right and use the proper size and rating tire front to back and you will be fine.
To test if the tire combo works in the snow, pick a large flat parking lot(NO POLES) and hit the brakes hard while cornering at 10-20mph. If the rear wheels slide out, put some weight in the trunk and repeat until satisfied.
