I'm by no means an expert, but I reckon that you could sort out the front end quite easily, though you would have to change all the lights. The doors are the same anyway. The door seals are re-engineered for the later cars and work much better. The rear end would be harder. The tail is higher on the CSE, rear wiper position is different and so forth. Also, the later body is appreciable stiffer so there must be improvements you would be missing out on. Later cars will take larger wheels so there may be other differences in that area
To be honest, I reckon DI is a great improvement over Hall-effect ignition and the spark plug issue is simple - use the right ones and check the gap, just as you would anyway. Driving on muddy roads as I do, in rural England, I like my ABS and if you get into real trouble you're driving too fast anyway!
Maybe you should look at pillaging the wreck of an early '90s CD, with more sloped-back lights that lengthen the nose slightly. But having moved from a 1990 car to a 1993, I appreciate the improvements, which are more than skin-deep.
