I go to an auto body supplier in town. They can supply me with a can of exact match paint in a spray can for about $12.
I sand down to bare metal with 150-grit, hand sanding best to keep the sanded area small. Then I wet sand with wet or day 220, then 400 grit. Wipe with thinner, then mask. Apply three thin coats of primer. I use Rust-Oleum (sp). The first coat won't cover adequately, but if you spray more you'll get sagging. Better to spray too little. Sand briefly with wet 400 grit between coats. The top coat should be applied sufficiently to look wet on side view. As soon as you get this much on, stop spraying and let dry, because any more will cause running. Need three coats. Finish with clearcoat, if you car has this.
After about a week, you can buff with polishing compound. I have trouble getting it shiny around the edges of my spray area. I try not to spray heavily right up to my masking tape, because that will create a telltale paint line at my trim. So I have a duller, rougher coat towards the edges, and I'm still trying to find a way to buff that out. I think I'll need a power buffer.
It might be worth getting an estimate from a body shop, even if you intend to do it yourself, as you can ask them about paint edge lines at your trim, and they may give you some helpful info there. Best of luck.
