Engine cutout, electrical gremlins with brake light???

Well,
Here's a true story for you: a 93 9000CS turbo owner had a light go out for one of his back taillights. Instead of the recommended Saab brand, he replaced the light with an off-brand light and thought no more about it. The car began acting strangely when using the brakes--like stalling and having trouble with the ignition when the brakes were on. In effect, the car started flipping out because it didn't have the *same* brand lights in the back. The dealer replaced the light and the problems went away.
NOW, is this really possible? Is the 9000 system so sensitive that the whole car gets screwed up just by having one bulb with (apparently) different specs? What happens when a light goes out and the only place you can get to is the local brand-x autoparts store that has bulbs you *think* are right but aren't??? Do you get stranded? Someone please tell me that this isn't the way Saab designed these cars... does this person's car just have some underlying electrical gremlins that acted up? Apparently, the car's been behaving perfectly ever since, but it makes me wary... also, it's possible that the dealer fixed more than just one lightbulb, but I'm not sure.
Thanks for the input,
Tim B.
