I would like to thank Karl from Sweden for his periodic postings on how to improve the intake capability of the 9000 by modifying the outer cover of the intake air box assembly mounted in the driver's side inner fender.
Karl, I followed your instructions to remove the restrictive 90 "elephant trunk" like intake air horn (which is narrower towards the front), and also making a 2 1/2" hole in the outer side of the air box cover (then placing some (window) screening material over the hole). After I did this I did experience a noticeable performance improvement with the stock oem paper filter on the car.
Now for the good part! This weekend I installed a K&N filter on the car and the improvement was truly dramatic! The turbo now spools up much more quickly and the improvement in acceleration is very much noticable (in the seat of one's pants!)! While I cannot quantify the level of improvement in horsepower or torque, it is very much noticeable, and for the relatively modest expenditure of cash and time (took me about an hour to access, modify and replace the airbox outer cover) this was a worthwhile bang for the buck improvement. The only downside is what will keeping my foot in the accelerator do for my gas mileage? - but then at the current price level of $1.15/gallon for premium here in New Jersey at least the hit on my wallet won't be all that bad.
Again Karl, thank you for the suggestion on how to improve the 9000's breathing. I owe you.
