They said there was a fault in the circuit (wiring) between the alternator and the dash light. I was quite skeptical of this at the time, as all indications were that I needed new brushes, or at worst, just a new/rebuilt alternator all together. So, I got myself a new set of brushes/regulator, installed it, and four and a half years later I'm still on the original alternator at 268k miles and it's working fine.
Also, halfway worn brushes are seriously worn out! Before you do anything else, put in a brand new set. I'm of course presuming that by halfway worn, you mean that the brush length is half as long as new brushes would be... For $40 or so, this certainly would be the first thing I'd do.
