Your car is supposed to have the EKZ knock sensor to set the timing. I have almost the same car, with auto gearbox. Have the factory manuals and they show in 88 the NON-turbo's have the knock sensor EKZ. The townsend site lists it also. Good description there on what your car has if you have not read it yet, I'd recommend it. One other thing to check is the NTC temp sensor, the contacts have been reported to get dirty and cause problems. It can be tested in place with an Ohm meter. Its located just below the intake, towards the passenger side between the inlet throats, it is vissible. If your Getting a fuel mix error code its probably not the timing, but still could be intermitant ignition (plug wires) Your ignition works the hardest when the engine does, as the higher the cylinder pressure, the more voltage required to fire the plug. Electricity is lazy, it will seek the path of least resistance to ground, so a nick in a plug wire may only show up under load. One old fasioned way to check plug wires (you have to pull the plug valley cover on a SAAB) is to run the engine in a very dark place and look for sparks occuring in the wire. Do you have a digital voltmeter? If you do you can monitor the O2 sensor while you drive, this will allow you to determine if the problem is a rich or lean condition.
