sandbox under the engine (Qusai writeup error)

This afternoon I started to work on the motor mounts. After removing the inner fender liner I was amazed by the amount of oily sand and grit that had accumulated on top of the subframe around the rear motor mount. Instead of using rags I should have used a spoon to get all the sand out.
Is this accumulation normal - I'm guessing that the mounts are original (car has 120K miles on it)

ps Quasi's writeup for motor mounts is incorrect. On an '87 the nut on top of the motor mounts is bigger than 16mm - I'm guessing they're about 19mm (I didn't have the wrench to get them out)
